Non-Stop Bebop    and    Anybody Home?

On Wednesday, April 3rd, 2002, The Matt Savage Trio performed a lunchtime concert at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA. Their performance was part of the “Brownbag Lunch” concert series sponsored by WICN 90.5 FM. If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of the lunch concerts sponsored by WICN, do it! The concert was broadcast live on-air and also web-cast simultaneously, so although the audience members at Mechanics Hall numbered approximately 450-500, there is no way of knowing the actual number of people worldwide who listened to the show.

Mechanics Hall is a spectacularly beautiful theatre, with plush red velvet seats and carpet, intricately carved woodwork, painted murals on the walls and ceilings. There is a beautiful organ built into the carved wood backdrop of the performance stage that resonates throughout the hall with haunting melodic lines and deep, resonating chords.  I know, because they let Matt play the organ before the concert, and he played some beautiful classical pieces that were just perfect for the occasion. Matt loves playing organs, and does so whenever he gets the chance. The one at Mechanics Hall is a very special one. I’d love to hear a huge musical concert performed there where the organ is the featured instrument. I bet it’s an incredible experience.

Anyway, there was a huge turnout at the trio’s concert. The audience was appreciative and looked like they were having a great time. Judging from the number of kind folks who spoke with me afterwards, asked Matt for autographs, purchased CDs, and wrote me letters or e-mails, the concert was a big success. The standing ovation at the end of the concert was also a big clue.

We wish to thank WICN and Gene Petit for the opportunity and pleasure of performing at such a special venue. Matt, John, and Steve enjoyed themselves immensely and hope to return to perform at Mechanics Hall in the future!
